If you are one of those who does not particularly care about the quality of the finishes of the equipment, the ConceptD 5 could become a serious alternative to the MacBook Pro at the level of performance and possibilities.

It is much cheaper, in addition to that, you will find certain facets frankly good, as is the case of your screen that has surprised us pleasantly.

Acer ConceptD 5: review

The launch took place during the annual press conference that the brand carries out every year in New York, where it has announced the new range of products aimed at creative users.

Called Acer ConceptD, the models arrive to rival the already existing ones as it is the case of the MacBook Pro. Here we show you our review fruit of the first impressions.

Price and release date

The new ConceptD 5 is already available in the United States from the month of April at a recommended price starting at $ 1,699 according to the most economical configuration. Later, it will reach other markets such as Spain throughout the month of July at a recommended price of € 1,699.

It should be noted that it is aimed at the community of creative users, a sector that until now has been characterized by prices of somewhat high equipment, as is the case of the most economical 15-inch MacBook Pro whose price is € 2,799. If you decide to add a better processor and more RAM you will find prices of up to € 7,479.

Design and construction quality

The construction quality of Apple’s equipment is well known, with an aluminum structure and composition difficult to overcome, which is why Cupertino’s has maintained it throughout the last years.

In the case of ConceptD 5, Acer has chosen to take an alternative that allows reducing the overall cost of the solution, using plastic finishes in its housing instead of first quality materials.

The spec sheet mentions that it is a mixture of magnesium and aluminum alloy, but in reality, you will not appreciate it in real life. In addition, the white finish gives it an appearance that resembles the MacBook of past times.

There is a positive aspect in all this, and it is that it turns out to be lighter and lighter equipment of just 1.5 Kg with a thickness of 16.9 mm. To join the set of the base with the screen, it uses a pair of hinges located on its sides. While the base is quite rigid, the screen feels somewhat more flexible and loose during handling.

The trackpad and keyboard in white tones match the rest of the chassis, with a large touch area to manage and display gestures with your fingers. It does not reach the premium sensation of the best equipment in the market, but there is a significant jump in quality.

Specifications and characteristics

Fulfilling the phrase of beauty is inside, the ConceptD 5 is clearly committed to offering the most advanced components to ensure performance in this area, including a generous 15.6-inch screen that will please designers and creatives.

The panel used can reproduce colors accurately by supporting Adobe RGB with a brightness level of 400 nits and a matte finish to prevent the appearance of typical unwanted reflections. You can configure the 4K resolution corresponding to the value of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels.

Inside, the most basic model part of Intel Core i5-8305G eighth generation. They are chips with four CPU cores and dedicated graphics with Radeon RX Vega M GL chip.

You can also choose from a wide variety of RAM (between 8 and 16 GB), as well as SSD storage in NVMe form up to 1 TB.

Although we have not had the possibility to analyze the configuration with the corresponding benchmarks, Acer points out that the configuration allows completing 2D graphic design projects with the most advanced applications on the market.

You also have an infinity of ports, as illustrated by the image of the equipment, including 3 USB 3.1 type A ports, HDMI video output, USB-C with DisplayPort and an SD memory card reader. There is also a fingerprint scanner to login in Windows.

It is clear that the quality of construction of the new Acer equipment does not seek to unseat the most elitist models such as Apple MacBook or Dell XPS. However, Acer thinks more about offering a serious alternative that is much cheaper for the user on foot.

You have a wide variety of connection ports, which is highly valued by the guild of graphics and creative designers who have specific needs to work with multiple screens and a multitude of devices and peripherals.

If you are willing to sacrifice the area that has to do with its finishes and the materials used, you will have in your hands a colorful team that at the level of performance, gives the size to address tasks considered advanced within the computing environment.
