We update you with all the new rumors and information about the iPhone SE 2. Do not lose detail about the release date, price, design, new tools and technical specifications of the iPhone SE 2.
Undoubtedly the iPhone SE is a phone requested by the public. The model was discontinued in September 2018, leaving iPhone fans wanting a new 4-inch smartphone.
Those who expected Apple to replace the iPhone SE with an equally affordable model were disappointed after learning the price of the new “cheap iPhone”, the iPhone XR.
So, the cheapest iPhone alternative today is a two-year-old iPhone 7, but if you’re looking for a smaller phone, then you should look for models from other brands. At least, these were your options until very recently.
However, after a few months, there is hope again that Apple will launch a new iPhone SE.
In January of 2019 Apple has sold a lot of iPhone SE (although no new ones were manufactured). This shows that there is a great demand for a smaller Apple phone, and above all, cheaper.
Is this reason enough for Apple to decide to launch a new iPhone SE 2?
Without a doubt, Apple would benefit from a cheaper phone. Apple had predicted to sell much less than what actually ended up selling in the quarter that includes Christmas 2018.
Tim Cook has explained that he intends to bring Apple to an untapped market. We are talking about China, where the expensive iPhone does not meet the demand for an affordable phone in a country where there are a lot of brands capable of offering quality smartphones at low cost.
On the other hand, Apple may consider that their iPhone XR meets these criteria, making the new phone more “affordable” brand. Although it is more affordable than the iPhone XS, it still costs almost twice the cost of the iPhone SE.
Will there be a cheaper iPhone?
The predictions of analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in early 2018 were true; He suggested that, along with updates to the iPhone X and a larger version with an OLED screen (now known as iPhone XS and XS Max), Apple would launch a cheaper iPhone in September 2018.
Except that the new phone would be a 6.1-inch model with an LCD screen that would have a much higher price than the iPhone SE.
This is essentially what happened. The iPhone XR arrived and the iPhone SE was discontinued in September 2018, leaving Apple’s cheaper and older iPhones to meet the budget demands of the low-end market.
This is a typical strategy of Apple, to concentrate on making more money with the phones it sells, with a greater amount of profits per device sold. This has always worked well for the company and has pleased its shareholders.
And as we mentioned to the shareholders, Apple announced in its financial call for the fourth quarter of 2018 that it would no longer report sales by device, but would instead focus on profits.
This is the key: Apple anticipated that he would see fewer phone sales, but he intended to continue earning a lot of money, that’s where he wanted the focus to be.
However, following Tim Cook’s warning to investors in early January 2019, it seems that this strategy is not paying off as expected by Apple.
We are talking a lot about the market in China, but all of the above can probably be applied to the rest of the world. Could a cheaper new phone be the solution to the fall in sales and the lower associated benefits in these times of economic uncertainty?
Will there be a smaller iPhone?
If the iPhone XR is really the substitute for the iPhone SE, does it mean that Apple will no longer sell a smaller phone? Perhaps.
But before rushing to find small Android phones, keep in mind that the iPhone XS squeezes a larger screen into a smaller phone that measures 143.6mm by 70.9mm, and has a thickness of 7.7m, while the iPhone SE is still being a small 123.8mm by 58.6mm and 7.6mm thick.
That’s only 2 cm longer and a little more than 1 cm wide, so the iPhone XS may not be as big as you thought.
Still, if you think that small is perfect, do not lose hope: we have seen details of a screen saver that has been leaked and “factory CAD drawings”, which point to an iPhone X style notch design on a small phone of size SE.
Release date iPhone SE 2
The iPhone XR confirms the original rumors of a cheaper version of the iPhone X, but as we explained, the XR does not serve as a replacement for the SE. Can we then expect a release of an iPhone SE 2?
An iPhone SE 2 may arrive in the spring of 2019, which would be three years after the date on which the iPhone SE was first launched.
Price of iPhone SE 2
In Spain, the iPhone SE can be purchased at the Apple Store, or at Amazon for € 266. The iPhone SE with 32GB of storage costs € 419, and the iPhone SE with 128GB costs € 529.
It is likely that the iPhone SE 2 has a very similar cost, probably something more expensive because as often happens with any technological device, the price goes down when it has been on sale for a long time (the iPhone SE was launched in 2016).
Design of the iPhone SE 2
A Chinese report of February 2018 states that the iPhone SE 2 will have a design similar to the current iPhone SE. However, apparently, it will have a screen of more than 4.2 inches. The report also states that it will continue to maintain the classic shape of the iPhone and the Front Home button with fingerprint recognition.
Another (relatively) radical prediction comes from the Chinese Macotakara report cited above, which says that the headphone port will disappear.
The idea that Apple would redesign the iPhone SE in a newer way does not get much support from analysts such as Ming-Chi Kuo, who believes that Apple is so busy with the successors of iPhones X and 8 that it will not have time or enough resources to focus on this entry-level phone.
Leaving aside a complete redesign, one thing that is likely to change are the color options.
The iPhone SE is currently available in silver, gold, gray “space” and rose gold. It is likely that the iPhone SE 2 is available in silver, gold and gray “space” like the iPhone 8.
The rose gold version and the gold version have been merged into the iPhone 8 and it is likely that the new iPhone SE will also offer this new gold option instead of two gold options.
It has also been suggested that the iPhone SE could come in colors similar to those of the iPhone 5C.
Rosenblatt analyst Jun Zhang predicted in May 2018 that the cheapest LCD model for iPhone launched at the end of 2018 would be launched in multiple colors, including blue, yellow and pink.
Zhang argues that these colors have been chosen to attract younger users and to differentiate between the iPhone LCD and the more expensive OLED models that will be launched at the same time.
“We believe that the company needs to differentiate the LCD model designs of the two high-end OLED models,” Zhang said. “A reasonable option would be to add different colors.”
In July, analyst Ming Chi Kuo also made predictions about the color of the iPhone SE 2. He claimed that the new iPhone 6.1 entry-level LCD will debut in “gray, white, blue, red and orange.”
Another possibility is that the new iPhone SE could have a glass back – allowing wireless charging, a feature already introduced with the iPhone 8 and iPhone X.
Filtered photos and illustrations
Some leaked photos of the iPhone SE 2 have been published. One of them, published on May 31, 2018, shows screen protectors for the SE 2 and the iPhone X, a photo that seems to confirm that the first one will have the same design as the Notch that the second.
The images that appeared on April 26 show a design with a new glass backrest for wireless charging and a 3.5 mm hole for a headphone jack.
The latter was quite surprising, since only a few days before, another image appeared that did not appear to show any headphones plugs.
The images appeared on the website of a Chinese social network, and it is not clear to what extent they are reliable or not.
Slashleaks has published an image that supposedly shows the chassis of the iPhone SE 2 in two colors: gold and rose gold. It is quite clear that they have glass backing, which suggests that they are compatible with wireless charging.
Now, instead of leaks we explore the conceptual illustrations that have been designed to explore ideas and design possibilities of this new iPhone SE 2.
Here you can see one of OnLeaks, who in turn explains that he can not confirm that the final design is going to fit or not to his illustration, it’s just an idea:
The case maker Olixar has created a template for the iPhone SE 2018 for a screensaver that he plans to sell; the image was provided by Mobile Fun. The firm says that the sketch is based on information from the supply chain.
In this video you can see an idea of what the Concept Creator can expect from the design of the new iPhone SE 2:
Concept Creator previously created another possible design idea for this new Apple device:
Dimensions of iPhone SE 2
Currently, the iPhone SE has a 4-inch screen (that is, 4 inches measured diagonally). The phone measures 123.8mm by 58.6mm and has a thickness of 7.6mm. It weighs 113g.
The new dimensions of the iPhone SE can be further reduced. The new phone could be as thin as the iPhone 8, with 7.3 mm.
It is also possible that the new iPhone SE does not end up being a smaller Apple phone (as is the original iPhone SE). According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is working on a low-cost version of the iPhone X that will have a LCD-TFT screen with fewer pixels, and that will cost between 649 and 749 dollars.
This screen would measure 6.1 inches diagonally so the new phone could be even larger than the iPhone 8.
Screen of iPhone SE 2
According to the theory of KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple could introduce a 6.1-inch LCD-TFT screen on its new low-cost iPhone, while the other iPhones will have OLED screens like the iPhone X.
It has also been suggested that the iPhone SE could have a 4.2-inch screen instead of the current 4-inch screen. The two additional inches would be possible thanks to the reduction in the size of the bevels.
Unlike the iPhone X, which has a screen that extends to the base of the phone (so it does not have a start button), it is expected that this button will remain in the SE 2.
Detractors suggest that Apple would not extensively change the design of the iPhone SE for as little change as the dimensions of the screen. It would involve a lot of research and development for a difference that would be very little noticeable to the consumer. I mean, it would not be worth it.
New tools for the iPhone SE 2
As the new iPhone SE 2 is not going to be a flagship phone, we do not expect it to have totally new and exclusive tools. Our focus is rather on trying to find out what tools you will acquire from other iPhone models such as the iPhone X or the iPhone 8 Plus.
This is one of the biggest dilemmas, if the new iPhone SE is going to have Face ID, this would mean that the start button itself will disappear. We would be facing an edge-to-edge screen without a start button like the iPhone X.
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone X SE (the LCD version of the largest iPhone to be launched in the fall) will have the Face ID, and with it the same biometric technology as the iPhone X, Animojis and, we presume, the portrait mode on the front.
Improved NFC capabilities
Since 2014, iPhones have been equipped with NFC chips, but these have historically been less functional than those of competing devices, essentially limited to Apple Pay for security reasons.
It is believed that Apple will soon be seen to ‘unlock’ the capabilities of these chips and allow iPhones to perform common NFC tasks such as interacting with ID card readers (to identify a user, open security doors, etc.).
According to The Information, citing sources familiar with the matter, this new tool is already so advanced that Apple’s own staff is already using it internally.
The new iPhone SE 2 (or iPhone X SE) could offer wireless charging due to its alleged glass back cover. The publication Tekz24 cites a “very reliable source” that claims that the new iPhone SE 2 will have a glass back panel.
The technology of the touch screen 3D Touch of Apple has existed for some time, and it seems logical to add it to the SE. But sources say that this will not be the case, and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo agrees.
As Tech Times notes, this runs the risk that the feature will be seen “as nothing more than a gimmick that only customers who buy the most expensive iPhones can enjoy.”
Technical specifications of iPhone SE 2
According to a report published by Tekz24 , the new iPhone SE 2 will offer an A10 Fusion chip (like the iPhone 7). The first model SE has an A9 chip (like the iPhone 6S).
In addition, it is very likely that we will see a 5Mp or 7Mp retina front camera, which would replace the 1.2Mp camera of the original model.
The battery may increase its power from 1,640mAh to 1,700mAh, something that would end up not being appreciated if finally the screen is larger, since a larger screen consumes more battery.
A part of this, surely the new iPhone will maintain many of the features that we saw in the iPhone SE, such as (among others):
- 12Mp camera
- 2GB of RAM
- 32GB or 128GB storage options
