The XPS edition of 2018 was a great leap in terms of screen quality, but can Dell improve the present and again justify the purchase of the new 2019 model? We tell you in this analysis all its news.

The Dell XPS 13 has established itself among the public that demands a high-performance laptop with a high degree of mobility. Throughout the years, its design has evolved in a surprising way to become the center of the looks of laptops of other brands.

The Dell XPS 13 has established itself among the public that demands a high-performance laptop with a high degree of mobility. Throughout the years, its design has evolved in a surprising way to become the center of the looks of laptops of other brands.

Prices and availability

As a continuation of the past versions, much of the new features of the new Dell XPS lie in the reduction of the frames and the upper bezel, where you will now find the webcam to carry out video conferences, with a more natural position.

Another revealing fact is that Dell manages to offer an entry price below the models of previous years, that yes with the most basic configuration of Core i3 processor and Full HD screen of 13.3 inches at a price of € 1,049.

When making the leap to a Core i5-8265U processor that maintains the Full HD screen but raises its amount of RAM to 8 GB, the price increases € 204 . A third option of the XPS 13 with Core i7-8265U and same Full HD screen you will find it for a recommended price of € 1,379.

The most significant price jump occurs when we add PCIe solid state drives of up to 2 TB, 16 GB RAM, or the 4K-quality InfinityEdge Ultra HD touch screen with 3840 x 2160 resolution, at which point the price escalates up to € 2,369.

Construction design

The company here has applied the rule of whether the good works, why change. Thus, the XPS 13 of 2019 maintains the same line as its predecessors; Elegant and professional, at the same time discreet.

The line focuses on offering the best quality construction, with super lightweight materials do not affect the final weight while ensuring maximum robustness to maintain the type over time.

You can find them in black, silver, rose gold and white finishes. The latter has a white cover that gives the laptop a more careful and distinguished line within the market.

Thus, the dimensions of the Dell XPS 13 of 2019 are as follows:

  • Height: between 7.8 and 11.6 mm
  • Width: 302 mm
  • Depth: 199 mm
  • Weight: 1.23 kilograms

The interlaced or woven video fiber that is present around the body of the keyboard provides great aesthetics to the device, giving it a certain personality as well as being easy to clean after days of use. In the white model it is more visible still.

As anticipated, one of the most notable changes compared to the 2018 version is the new location of the webcam, which has again been moved to the small bevel on top. This makes it have to be something bigger, 5.9 mm compared to the previous 4 mm.

The new hinge also improves the above, ensuring greater stability of the equipment when you have it open or with a fairly wide viewing angle. However, it is still difficult to open the laptop with one hand because of the low resistance offered by the hinge.

Keyboard and trackpad

The distribution of the keys and the large touchpad area look especially good on the new Dell XPS 13, especially if the model you have in hand is the one that presents finished in white.

It has several levels of backlighting to facilitate its use and the route of the keys after the pulsation, surprises by the demonstrated agility. In general, they are spacious, favoring the fact that you do not make mistakes when you press several at the same time.

Regarding your trackpad area , highlight how gestural gestures typical of pinching or enlargement present an agile interaction with the Windows operating system. In this way, you will not miss the use of a mouse as additional support.

4k screen

Here it is worth noting that you can find two types of screens in the new XPS 13 of 2019. On the one hand are the models with touch screen InfinityEdge UltraSharp 4K, whose resolution scales at 3840 x 2160 pixels, and on the other, Full HD models with lower resolution of 1920 x 1080 without the possibility of choosing which is tactile.

The good news is that the second indicated has allowed the equipment to be considerably cheaper to access a configuration at half price. Also, the battery is more efficient to have to feed a panel easier and with fewer pixels.

Specifications and performance

The XPS 13 of 2019 comes with a wide choice of processors from the eighth generation Intel Core, including the Core i3-8145U, the i5-8265U and the i7-8565U. Now, if you invest money in a team of these benefits, it is advisable not to choose the entry-level model.

The Core i3 is the most economical, but thanks to the increased performance you get with the higher processors, be sure that you have made a good investment. Although you only intend to use it for the web environment, word processing and visualization of video content, the increase in power offered by the i5 will have been worthwhile.

Already in the memory part, the fan opens from 4 GB to 16 GB, with double-channel LPDDR3 type modules. Storage is also highly configurable with SSDs ranging from 128 GB to 2 TB of storage.

Our tests are based on the use of the Core i7 model with 8 GB of RAM. Running the Geekbench 4 benchmark we reached scores of 14310, while with PCMark 10 we reached a value of 4009.

Extrapolated and compared with other equipment on the market, it should be noted that the performance is within the average offered by other equipment such as ZenBook 14 from Asus. It is something that you can observe in the performance graph that we attach.

In the area of graphics, do not expect to be able to use the Dell XPS 13 for gaming- intensive environments such as demanding games. We depend on the integrated Intel UHD 260 graphics, so we can only address the execution of sporadic games.

On the other hand, the value obtained from 4698 in 3DMark tells us that it is suitable to handle video editing tools and photo retouching.

Autonomy and connectivity

Dell guarantees that with the Full HD screen model you will be able to reach 21 hours of autonomy, but it is undoubtedly a very optimistic figure. With our tests and the brightness of the screen at 40%, we played a video in loop mode and we got times of 11 hours and 19 minutes.

These are positive values that exceed in more than 30 minutes those offered by the XPS 13 edition of the previous year. This means that by making light use of the equipment, you will be able to face a full day of work.

For connectivity purposes, within the limitations that this type of mobility-oriented equipment has, we have two Thunderbolt 3 ports with power supply, another DisplayPort port and a third USB C port.

There is also space for a microSD card reader and the typical mini- jack for headphones. You can use the adapter included with the device to connect devices and pen drives with traditional USB connector.

Verdict

We are aware that the main changes introduced in the XPS 13 range of 2019 are in its interior, with the new generation of eighth generation Intel Core processors with higher performance, clock speeds and improved energy efficiency.

However, there are also small changes such as the position of the webcam, a much more natural place to carry out videoconferences. We like the variety of models from which to choose, and Dell offers a wide range to fit better the particular needs of each.
