LG expands the family of Gram notebooks with two new models: the LG Gram 17, which is positioned as the lightest in its category with only 1.3 kg, and the LG Gram 14, a new convertible 2 in 1 with touch screen and Wacom AES 2.0 digital pen.
After a quick contact and waiting to test it thoroughly, we can say that the new LG Gram 17 (17Z990) is the lightest 17-inch screen notebook with a weight of only 1.3 kg.
The company has equipped it with a 72 Wh battery that is charged in just 3 hours and with which it is possible to exceed 19 and a half hours of use of the equipment, which is equivalent to facing the longest non-stop flight that currently exists: between New York and Singapore.
We show you our first impressions of the LG Gram, very focused on mobility and endowed with the latest Intel processors to offer the necessary performance to face any professional task that boasts.
Price and availability
LG has presented the new LG Gram 17 (17Z990) with which it expands the range of laptops belonging to its area of computing. This team arrives with a basic configuration that starts at € 1,799, which is already on sale in Spain.
Until now, the company had models with screen sizes of 13.3 “, 14” and 15.6“, all with common features focused on ensuring lightness and great autonomy.
Next to the 17-inch model, LG has also introduced the LG Gram convertible 2 in 1 (14T990), a computer with a 14-inch screen that rotates 360 degrees on the base for easy use as a tablet , accompanied by your pencil digital.
The weight of this model LG Gram 14 (14T990) amounts to 1.14 kg, its screen is tactile and the price of all in one part of the € 1,699 in the case of the most basic configuration.
Design and connections
For design purposes, LG maintains the components of its previous Gram generations with which it has obtained various awards and recognition. The materials of magnesium and nanocarbon alloy that cover the structure of the laptop make it possible for the weight in the different models to remain around the kilogram.
For practical purposes, we like to see such a variety of connections and ports in a laptop oriented to ultramobility. Against the new trend by other brands to simplify and offer the minimum, with the Gram range you will have a wide offer.
Specifically, the LG Gram 17 has 3 USB 3.1 type A ports, one USB Type C compatible with Thunderbolt 3, HDMI video output, MicroSD card slot, as well as mini-jack headphone connection . You can not ask for much more.
To the naked eye or under the arm, the laptop goes unnoticed as a model of smaller size. This is possible because its 17 “screen is mounted on the body of a 15.6” with an aspect ratio of 16:10 for easy viewing.
It is an IPS screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels that covers a color spectrum of more than 96% of the sRGB standard. The company, specialized in the manufacture of Smart TV and monitors of all kinds, assembles here a WQXGA panel that we can only recriminate it other than 4K.
Initial adjustments allowed us to verify that it offers good levels of brightness, as well as wide viewing angles. But you should know that it does not offer a matte finish but in brightness, with which the videos will look better but you will suffer some uncomfortable reflections.
As you know, another great advantage offered by laptops with these 17-inch dimensions is that they have a wide area for your keyboard and touchpad . In the case of the LG Gram 17, its chiclet keyboard is complete including the numerical zone.
The arrangement is appropriate, with well-marked signs to identify the function keys (Fn). They are spacious among themselves, facilitating the pulsations and avoiding the typical errors of pressing several at the same time.
The keyboard supports backlighting for use in different environments, with the exception that it only offers two levels of higher and lower intensity, compared to other systems that offer greater variation.
Located in the upper right corner and hidden under a key (it is still difficult to find it) we have the fingerprint reader to unlock the laptop as we have been doing with smartphones for some time.
Performance and autonomy
For performance purposes, the inclusion of the eighth-generation Intel Core processors gives the laptop enough performance to handle a variety of tasks. RAM is now faster with the possibility to choose the 16 GB model.
Storage is another important aspect of the Gram series. The family comes standard with two SSD slots so that, once you acquire your laptop with a specific capacity, you can expand it with a new unit as time passes and you need it.
After this first contact costs to issue a final verdict without knowing for sure if it complies with the data offered by the company LG, especially those associated with autonomy with more than 19 and a half hours of use before having to recharge their battery.
We also like the fact that the one hundred percent load can be carried out in just 3 hours. However, we would improve the type of power connector used. LG chooses to include an owner (circular), when the ideal would be to bet another magnetic that adheres better to the equipment, or even the USB Type C standard.
The screen looks pretty good especially if you will spend many hours watching series and movies. The viewing angles are also wide to work with office applications, although we would have liked it to handle higher resolutions that reached 4K.
Soon we will offer a complete review of the equipment with all the information associated with the performance and duration of your battery, key elements to make the final decision of your purchase.
