Today is the 10th. As every year since the last nine, Samsung has brought together the press and professionals of the technology sector in an amphitheater to celebrate their particular Unpacked event and present several new products. However, today’s has been a much more special event. Today the Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10 +, the mobile phones that mark the tenth anniversary of the Galaxy S series, have been presented.

The leaks, as usual, had hardly left room for surprises, but that has not prevented DJ Koh and company jumping on stage with the same mixture between nerves and satisfaction of recent years to announce all the news of the company for this first part of 2019, starting with the Galaxy S10 itself .

We already know all the features and specifications of this pair of smartphones , which at least during the first half of the year will lead the Samsung catalog.

And like every year since the last nine, you can consult its two full technical sheets, the Samsung Galaxy S10and the Samsung Galaxy S10 + in the comparator of our colleagues at Highlytechno . For our part, we will see all the specifications, prices and information of the best phones of the South Korean firm to date.

Design: the fingerprint reader goes and the screen hole arrives

As much as Samsung managed to stay out of the fashion of the “notch” in 2018 , we all knew that sooner or later would have to resort to a similar solution if his intention was to continue expanding the area occupied by the screen of their phones with respect to the frontal. And so it has been.

For the first time, the reduction of margins is compounded by the inclusion of a hole in the screen , an incipient fashion from which Samsung has not managed to escape, which the company itself refers to as “Infinity O Display” .

The changes at the aesthetic level also reach the back, because the typical fingerprint reader disappears completely – although it gives way to a new technology that I will talk about later -, at the same time that three cameras are included on the back , each one in charge of fulfilling a different function.

The Galaxy S10 + Ultimate Performance Edition, unlike its smaller brothers, has a ceramic back available in black and white colors.

There are also changes in terms of finishes. Not in the “normal” editions of the Galaxy S10 and S10 +, which continue to be manufactured in glass and aluminum as well as having protection against water and dust under an IP68 level, but in the special edition of the Galaxy S10 + to which Samsung referred to as “Samsung Galaxy S10 + Ultimate Performance Edition” , which beyond improved features, differs from its brothers by having a back made of ceramic and available in black and white colors.

As for the rest of “normal” models, new color tones arrive, including green, white, black, blue and yellow.

Display: AMOLED technology becomes “dynamic”

For the first time since the arrival of Super AMOLED technology next to the Samsung Galaxy S2 of 2011, Samsung changes course and denomination for its panel technology. The Galaxy S10 and S10 + are the first to adopt Dynamic AMOLED screens , more accurate in terms of color and definition, and with an improved power consumption.

In addition, Samsung claims to have reduced the amount of blue light emitted by the panel without having to activate the “night light” option.

As for the screens themselves, we find some sizes that in both models exceed 6 inches: 6.1 for the S10, and 6.4 for the S10 + . In any case, we enjoy Wide Quad HD + resolution that yields a number of pixels of 3,040 x 1,440 due to its 19: 9 format. There is also no characteristic “edge” curvature on both sides of the glass panel, certainly protected by Gorilla Glass 6 technology.

In both cases the screen size exceeds 6 inches: 6.1 for the S10, and 6.4 for the S10 +

Among other improvements that this new type of panel provides, we find compatibility with HDR10 + content . Samsung also points out that the screen now occupies more than 93% of the front.

But the main novelty in this regard is undoubtedly the inclusion of the fingerprint reader under the panel . It is an ultrasonic sensor, which promises speed and accuracy at the same time as conventional sensors, with the difference that it does not need to occupy space of the terminal chassis. A detail to keep in mind is that the reader can be used even when the screen is at rest.

Technical specifications: Exynos 9820 and battery that can be shared

The Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10 + arrive, as it could not be otherwise, with the best of the best in terms of technical specifications. The Exynos 9820 platform debuts inside the two models , with its 8 nanometers and 8 cores, organized in a tri-cluster structure and of which two cores customized by Samsung are responsible for squeezing the chip to the maximum to get the best performance , while four others are focused on maintaining maximum efficiency. The remaining two will be those used for most day-to-day tasks.

Next to the chip, we find for the first time in a Samsung mobile a neural processing unit -NPU- responsible for supporting the Exynos 9820 in those tasks that require a high computational load -mainly those related to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning-.

As for its GPU, it is the Mali-G76 MP12 – the same that integrates the Huawei Mate 20 Pro -, capable of doubling in terms of power to the previous Mali-G72 , and especially optimized for the performance of high-level tasks. graphic performance The company has also worked with Unity to optimize performance when playing heavier titles, and uses a vapor-based liquid cooling system to keep the phone fresh even after a Fortnite marathon.

Supporting the new processor of the Galaxy S10 and S10 + is responsible for an 8 GB LPPDR4 RAM module -Samsung does not seem ready to equip its latest terminals with the new LPDDR5 memory modules whose advantages over the LPDDR4 technology we saw already in its time -, and two variants of internal storage to choose: 128 or 512 GB, in both cases expandable by microSD up to 512 GB.

Special mention deserves the Samsung Galaxy S10 + Ultimate Performance Edition, which boosts its memory capacities up to 12 GB of RAM and 1 TB -1024 GB of internal storage also expandable.

The advances also reach autonomy, with batteries that grow in capacity with respect to the previous generation. The Samsung Galaxy S10 has a battery capacity of 3,400 mAh , and that of his older brother increases to 4,000 mAh . In both cases we enjoy fast charging and fast wireless charging -with compatible chargers-, as well as the new Wireless PowerShare system , which allows you to recharge other devices when you put them on the back of the phone.

Software: One exit UI and finally Bixby in Spanish

The update to Android 9 Pie for Samsung phones brought a totally renewed software that debuted in the Galaxy S9 under the name One UI . Today, Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10 + become the first phones to be presented with this version since its inception , and of course with all the changes and developments of this software.

As for the changes themselves that come with the Galaxy S10, Samsung highlights improvements in the speed of the user interface , which among other things mean a greater speed of opening applications compared to previous versions. Energy consumption has also been improved in several ways, one of them taking advantage of the OLED panel’s capabilities through the new dark theme that affects the entire interface.

Bixby is also a protagonist in the terminal’s software -one more year-. And this time we are glad to know that Samsung’s virtual assistant is finally available in Spanish , after several years of disadvantage with respect to its main competitors. We will have to wait until we compare it with Google Assistant to see if this time it deserves an opportunity.

Photography and multimedia: triple camera on the back smarter than ever

With the Galaxy S9 +, the company introduced for the first time a dual camera system on the back of one of its Galaxy S series phones. Now, the giant based in Seoul decides to throw the house out the window and include a system of triple camera on the back of the two models of the S10 series . These are, on paper, the technical specifications of each sensor:

  • Ultra Wide Sensor : 16 megapixels f / 2.2 Fixed Focus.
  • Main sensor: 12 megapixels Dual Pixel with variable aperture f / 1.5-2.4 with autofocus and optical stabilizer.
  • “Tele” sensor : 12 megapixels f / 2.4 with optical stabilizer and autofocus.

Combined, the three sensors promise to offer one of the most versatile photographic experiences of the entire high range of 2019 , both by the capabilities of each of the cameras and by their unique additions such as the variable aperture of the main sensor, or the optical stabilizer that they include two of the sensors.

There are also improvements to artificial intelligence level taking advantage of the Exynos 9820 and its NPU capabilities, as the intelligent scene optimizer reappears , which now adds 10 more scenes to the 20 already included in the Galaxy S9 camera.

Regarding its capabilities when recording video, highlights the possibility of capturing clips in Super Slow Motion at 960 frames per second for twice as long as in the Galaxy S9 -from 0.4 to 0.8 seconds-, in addition to being able to Then choose which part of the video you want to slow down.

The only difference at the photographic level between the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10 + is found in the front. The Galaxy S10 incorporates a unique sensor of 10 megapixels Dual Pixel with aperture f / 1.9 , able to capture images with blur effect through the Live Focus option, and to record video in 4K resolution – the first of the company to do so –

However, the Galaxy S10 + accompanies the main sensor of an 8 megapixel secondary with autofocus and aperture f / 2.2 , mainly responsible for obtaining depth information when capturing with portrait mode, and thus generates a more realistic blur effect – at least on paper. In both cases, the sensors will also be designed to allow the user to unlock the phone with his face, through a 2D facial unlocking system.
